Fauna and flora
So far, at least 24 species of marine organisms with a different status of a threatened species have been identified in the area of the Ankaran Municipality.
According to the criteria of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the most endangered species is the Adriatic sturgeon (Accipenser nacarii), which was caught near Ankaran ten years ago. Adriatic sturgeon has the status of a critically endangered species, which is the second highest risk status.
Sharks and turtles
The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), the baskin shark (Cetorhinus maximus) and the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) were observed in the sea around Ankaran. All three have the status of a vulnerable species. Sightings of the baskin shark and the loggerhead turtle have been many, especially in the last fifteen years, while the sightings of the white sea wolf are only recorded in the State Archives in Trieste.
The allegedly extinct species found its home on the Ankaran Peninsula
An autochthonous Slovenian species, the dragon lily, allegedly extinct, found a new home on Debeli rtič. The dragon lily was considered extinct by 2010, but a specimen was found by coincidence in Ankaran.
